What "compliant" actually means
Fire compliance for an Indian office is not a single certificate. It is a small system, and every part of it has to be alive, not just present.
- Extinguishers that are the right type for the risk, mounted where people can reach them, and refilled on schedule - an expired extinguisher is decoration.
- Detection and alarm that has been tested recently enough that you know it works, not assumed to work.
- Hydrants and sprinklers, where the building has them, under a live maintenance contract.
- Signage and clear evacuation routes - the exit nobody can find is not an exit.
- A fire NOC, kept current, because a lapsed one is both a legal exposure and, often, an insurance one.
The thread running through all of it: presence is not the same as function. A building full of red cylinders that nobody has checked in three years is not protected. It just looks protected, which is arguably worse, because it buys false comfort.
The drill is not theatre
People roll their eyes at evacuation drills. Then a real alarm goes off and you discover that half the floor does not know where the assembly point is, the fire door was propped open with a chair, and nobody knows who is responsible for checking the meeting rooms are empty. A drill is cheap. Finding this out during an actual fire is not.
Run one. Watch what breaks. Fix it. Run another.
